Prompt & Questions Research

Overview of Prompt Research

Unlike traditional search engines where users type short keywords like "best AEO tool", generative AI assistants are designed for conversational, natural-language prompts. Users ask full questions: "Which tracking tool integrates best with Next.js?" or "Should I choose AEOTrack or a competitor?"

Prompt & Questions Research is the process of finding out what people are asking AI about your brand and tracking those specific prompts to measure your visibility.

What people ask AI about your brand

To understand your brand’s AI footprint, you need to monitor three main categories of questions:

  1. Brand-Specific Queries — Questions directly containing your company name:

    • "What does AEOTrack do?"
    • "Is AEOTrack safe to use?"
    • "How much does AEOTrack cost?"
  2. Categorical & Comparison Queries — Questions asking for recommendations in your industry or comparing you to competitors:

    • "What are the best Answer Engine Optimization tools?"
    • "Compare AEOTrack vs. other visibility trackers."
    • "Which tool is better for monitoring Perplexity mentions?"
  3. Problem-Solving Queries — High-intent questions from prospective buyers trying to solve a problem:

    • "How can I track my brand visibility in ChatGPT?"
    • "How do I optimize my website for AI crawlers?"

How to find what people ask AI

AEOTrack provides built-in tools to help you discover the exact prompts your target audience uses:

The AI Prompt Research tool

Our automated research tool scans your website, analyzes your industry, and queries major AI engines to reverse-engineer the most common questions related to your product.

  • Enter your URL in the AI Prompt Research tool.
  • Review the generated suggestions categorized by user intent.
  • Click "Add to Tracker" on the questions you want to monitor.

Analyzing customer service and sales logs

Look at the questions your support and sales teams receive daily. If a customer asks a human a question, they are highly likely to ask an AI assistant the same question first.

Tracking Keywords & Prompts

Once you have identified the core prompts, you can add them to your tracking queue:

  1. Add Prompts — Navigate to the Prompts tab and select Add New Prompt.
  2. Assign Tags — Group your prompts by intent, product category, or audience stage (e.g., brand, competitor-intel, high-intent).
  3. Select Cadence — Choose how frequently you want AEOTrack to scan these queries (e.g., daily, weekly).

Best practices for prompt tracking

  • Be Conversational — Avoid adding single keywords. Write prompts as complete, natural sentences that reflect real user queries.
  • Track Competitors Explicitly — Always track comparison prompts where you are pitted against top competitors to accurately measure your Share of Voice.
  • Update Prompts Regularly — Review your tracked prompts list quarterly. Add new questions as your product features expand and archive old ones that are no longer relevant.
