AI referral traffic report

What it shows

Once GA4 is connected (see Google Analytics integration), Integrations → AI referral traffic reports the sessions that arrived on your site from AI assistants: ChatGPT (chatgpt.com), Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude, You.com and Bing Chat — every one is listed, with zeros where nothing arrived. For each engine you see sessions, engaged sessions, conversions if you have marked events as conversions in GA4, and the landing pages those sessions arrived on.

Why it sits next to the visibility score

The visibility score says whether engines name you; the referral report says whether people click. Read together:

  • Named often, little traffic — the answers name you but do not link you, or link a page that does not match the question. Check the cited-but-not-mentioned view under Sources and the landing pages here.
  • Traffic without mentions — an engine is linking a page of yours as a source without recommending you by name. Common with Perplexity; the fix is on the page being cited.
  • Both rising together after a change is the signal the improvement plan is working.

Landing pages

The landing-page table lists which of your pages AI assistants send people to. Pages that appear here and are also cited in tracked answers are your strongest assets; keep them current. Pages that receive AI traffic but are not cited for any tracked question suggest a question you should be tracking.

Limits

  • GA4 attributes a session to a referrer only when the assistant passes one. Some in-app browsers strip it, so the report undercounts; treat it as a floor.
  • Data lags GA4 by up to a day, and the report is cached briefly, so a change shows within the hour.
  • The window is 7 to 90 days (30 by default). The report is per website and needs a GA4 property connected to that website.
