Confirm your business
Why AEOTrack asks
AI engines answer about the business a question describes. If AEOTrack takes you for someone else, every question is written for that someone else, and the score measures the wrong company. Two things go wrong most often:
- A namesake. Another company has the same or a similar name, often a bigger one. Questions written for it are answered about it, and its mentions look like yours.
- A service taken for a product. A firm that builds software for clients, asked "best CAD software" questions, is compared with software vendors it does not compete with. Asked "best CAD development companies", the engines name firms like it.
So before your questions are written, AEOTrack tells you who it thinks you are and asks you to confirm it.
What you confirm
After the website scan, AEOTrack reads your homepage and says who it thinks the business is, for example: "We think you are Acme Coffee Roasters, a coffee roaster in Portland, United States. Right?" Confirm it, or correct any part:
- Name: the name buyers know you by. A confirmed name is added to your brand aliases, so an answer that writes it counts as naming you.
- Service, product or both: what you sell. A service business gets questions that ask for providers ("best accountants for small businesses in Leeds"), never "best ... software", and its suggested competitors are businesses of the same kind.
- Category: what you are, in a few words.
- Location: where you work or sell.
- Country: the country your buyers are in (see below).
The questions and competitors AEOTrack suggests are built from what you confirm, and never from a famous company that shares your name.
The country
If your company has no country yet and your website's address does not give one, AEOTrack asks for it with the website address, before the scan (Country your buyers are in): it is needed to add the website. A domain on a country code gives its country (acmecoffee.co.uk gives the United Kingdom); a .com or .io gives none. On the confirmation screen the country is one of the fields you can correct under Not quite? Change it. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity are asked from that country. See Set your country.
The names on your homepage
When you add a website, AEOTrack also reads the names your homepage gives the business: its title, its site name and the names in its structured data (name, alternate name and legal name). The ones that fit the domain are added to your brand aliases, so "Acme Coffee Roasters" counts for acmecoffee.example without you typing it. Page words and generic titles such as "Home" are ignored.
The aliases are yours to edit under Settings → Websites. A name you remove is not added back. After any change, the stored answers are read again.
A homepage name that does not fit the domain is not added for you. Once the answers write it, AEOTrack suggests it instead, with the other names the answers use for you: see Brand names and "Is this you?".
When your questions may be out of date
The questions AEOTrack suggested were written for the business as it understood it. When you change your brand name or aliases, or confirm a different business, those suggested questions are marked as possibly out of date, and AEOTrack can propose a new set:
- See new suggestions shows the proposed questions, how many suggested questions they would replace and how many of your own questions stay. Nothing changes until you tick the ones you want and choose Use these N questions.
- Only questions AEOTrack suggested are replaced, all of them at once. Questions you added after setup are never touched.
- On a website set up before late October 2026, AEOTrack did not record which questions it had suggested, so every question created during that setup can count as suggested, including one you typed then. The count in the preview tells you how many will go.
- A replaced question is retired with its history kept, not deleted.
- The new questions are checked on the next scheduled check. To see their answers now, use Check now on a question; the first check of a new question is free.
Suggested questions only ask for names: questions such as "best coffee subscription for home brewing", which an engine answers by naming businesses. How-to and informational questions ("how to store coffee beans") are not suggested, because their answers name nobody. A tracked question that turns out this way is flagged as This question doesn't fit, in Check your setup on the Dashboard and Check these questions on the Questions page, with a one-click replacement; see A question that doesn't fit.
A name tied to another company's site
Separately from the confirmation, an answer is not counted as naming you when the only name that matched is one it ties to another company's website: it cites, links or writes that company's address, and never yours. A more specific name of yours in the same answer still counts. See How the score works.
When at least two answers do this with the same company, the Dashboard's Check your setup section asks Not you? ("These answers are about a different ... Is this you?"), with Confirm who you are and Suggest questions about your business. See Answers about a different business with your name.
