Complete AEOTrack Setup Guide

Welcome to AEOTrack!

This guide explains how AEOTrack works and how to set up your account to start tracking your brand's visibility across AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok. Your first answers arrive about 7 minutes after you add your website (the median for new accounts).

What AEOTrack measures

AEOTrack asks the AI engines the things your buyers ask and records whether they name you, who they name instead, and which pages they read to write the answer. It reports two scores:

  • Questions score: how you appear in answers to specific questions buyers ask ("best coffee subscription for home brewing").
  • Topics score: how you appear when the engines write a broader overview of a subject ("brewing coffee at home").

These are what the industry calls AEO and GEO; the terms are explained once, in Core concepts.

Getting Started

To access detailed reports, tracking, competitor analysis, and monitoring tools, you must create an AEOTrack account.

Step 1: Create Your Account

Click Start free trial and create your account either with Continue with Google (the first option on the sign-up page) or with your name, work email, website and a password. The trial is 7 days with no card, on the Starter plan's limits, and its 7 days start when you add your website in setup.

With email and password, AEOTrack emails you a confirmation link. Open it to continue.

Step 2: Confirm Your Email

  • Open the link in the email. It confirms your address, signs you in and takes you straight to setup. Your 7-day trial starts in the next step, when you add your website, not when you sign up or confirm your email (When your 7-day trial starts).
  • Can't find it? Check Spam and, on Gmail, the Promotions tab. Send the email again on the "Check your inbox" screen sends another copy; every copy works for 72 hours.
  • Google sign-in counts as confirmed immediately. See Google sign-in and email verification.

Onboarding Setup

The onboarding process helps AEOTrack understand your website, competitors, and industry.

Step 1: Scan & Confirm (Tell us what to track)

  • Enter your website domain (e.g., acmecoffee.example).
  • Choose your country if AEOTrack asks, on the same form, before the scan: Country your buyers are in. It asks when your company has no country yet and the domain does not give one (a .com, for example), because the website cannot be added without it; ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity are then asked from that country. See Set your country.
  • Scan my website adds the website, and that starts your 7-day trial. If the website already has an AEOTrack account in another workspace, AEOTrack shows that account instead, with Request access to ask its owner to invite you; see One account per website, and inviting colleagues.
  • AEOTrack performs a live scan of your website. No installation, plugins, or code changes are required.
  • The scan analyzes public website pages, homepage content, website structure, and existing SEO and schema signals.
  • After scanning, select your brand name and choose your company size.
  • Confirm the business. AEOTrack says who it thinks you are, for example "We think you are Acme Coffee Roasters, a coffee roaster in Portland, United States. Right?": the name, whether you sell a service, a product or both, the category and the location. Confirm it, or correct any part of it, the country included, under Not quite? Change it. Your questions and competitors are written for the business you confirm, so a namesake or a wrong category never sets them. See Confirm your business.
  • The names your homepage gives the business are added to your brand aliases, so answers that use them count as naming you.

Step 2: Your Buyers (How they search, who you lose to)

Two quick answers in your own words. They steer the questions AEOTrack writes for you toward ones a buyer would really ask an AI assistant, the kind it answers by naming businesses.

  • What do buyers type when they need a business like yours? Add 2 to 5 short phrases, the way a buyer would type them (e.g., coffee subscription for home brewing, fresh roasted beans online).
  • Who do you lose deals to? Up to 3 names or websites. AEOTrack pre-fills the likeliest ones from your site, never a place, a directory or your own business; change them if they are wrong. They are tracked as competitors and never put into your questions.

Step 3: Competitor Analysis (Who you're up against)

  • AEOTrack suggests competitors based on your website and industry. It never suggests a place, a directory or listing site (Yelp, Tripadvisor, G2 and the like), an ingredient or a practice, or your own business; once it knows you sell a service, it leaves out marketplaces such as Upwork too.
  • You can keep suggested competitors, remove competitors using the trash icon, or add custom competitors manually. A name you type is tracked as you wrote it.
  • For each competitor, provide the competitor name and website URL.
  • If a tracked competitor turns out not to be a business you compete with, the Dashboard asks Not a competitor? and removes it in one click. See Competitors that aren't competitors.

Onboarding Competitors

Step 4: Questions to Track (What people ask AI)

  • These are real questions users ask platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok.
  • Every suggestion asks for names, the kind of question an engine answers by naming businesses. How-to and informational questions are not suggested, and a service business is never asked about software.
  • Keep at least 3 questions to run your first check; 10 are set up and recommended, and you can add more later up to your plan's ceiling (25 on the trial and on Starter).
  • You can select suggested questions, remove irrelevant questions, or add your own.
  • If you arrived from the free audit, the audit's question is pinned to the top of the list and labelled From your free audit.
  • These become your tracked questions.

Onboarding Questions

Step 5: Topics to Track (Optional: broader topics AI writes about)

  • This step is optional: keep the suggested topics (usually the right starting set), pick your own, or choose Skip for now and add topics later from Manage Tracking.
  • These topics make up your Topics score: whether the same AI engines include you when they write a broader overview of a subject rather than answer one specific question.

Screenshot of onboarding step 5, Topics to Track, for the fictional Acme Coffee Roasters: "What broader topics should AI know you for?" with five AI-suggested topics selected (specialty coffee subscriptions, buying fresh roasted coffee online, home espresso beans, single origin coffee, coffee gifts), and the buttons Back, Skip for now and Next (5 selected).

Step 6: AI Analysis (Your starting score)

AEOTrack now runs its complete analysis: every question and topic, brand visibility, competitor comparisons, AI citations, and content evaluation.

Onboarding first check

[!NOTE] Your first answers arrive about 7 minutes after you add your website (the median for new accounts): we ask five real AI engines every question and topic, one live answer per engine each.

What's happening behind the scenes?

Each question is sent to five real AI engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok. For every response, AEOTrack tracks:

  • Whether your brand was mentioned (represented by a green check badge ✅).
  • Whether competitors were mentioned (represented by a grey check badge ⚪).
  • Citations and sources used.
  • Share of voice and answer quality.

You can tap any AI engine to view the full response.

Your Results

After the scan completes, you will receive:

  • Scores: Questions score, Topics score, and Content Score.
  • Insights:
    • What's working: Highlights strong content areas, good structure, existing citations, and AI-friendly sections.
    • Problems and solutions: Identifies missing schema, weak content, competitor advantages, internal linking issues, and FAQ gaps.

Click Go to Dashboard to continue.

For your first 14 days the Dashboard leads with one screen rather than the full set of cards. It opens on your top question: who AI names for it, each engine's answer with its date, and Ask it yourself links that open the same question in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Under it come the verdict across all your questions ("Not named in any of 50 answers yet" is the usual first result) with the line Visibility score N/100 · likely range ..., why you are not named for that question, Questions with your name in them, and Do this this week with See the full plan. The first-result email reaches your inbox at the same time. An engine whose answer failed is never counted as not naming you. Your first 48 hours explains each part.

Prompts that fix your setup

From the first check on, the Dashboard asks you to correct what the answers show is set up wrong, one click each, and nothing changes until you click. Is this you? is a banner of its own; the other three sit together in the Dashboard's Check your setup section:

Core Monitoring Features

Visibility Tracker

The Visibility Tracker is a core monitoring tool that shows whether AI platforms mention your brand when people ask questions related to your space or industry.

AEOTrack Visibility Tracker

Key Capabilities & Features:

  • Questions score: Displays your overall Questions score, a 0 to 100 index built from what the engines answered: an answer that names you scores 25 plus up to 75 for how prominently you are named, whether your site is cited and the tone, an answer that only lists your site as a source scores 22.5, and any other answer scores 0. Questions no engine answers with any business are marked Advice-only · not in your score and can be swapped with Replace. See How the score works.
  • Question Management:
    • Add Custom Questions: Easily add specific questions your customers might ask an AI assistant.
    • AI Recommendations: Click Suggest questions to let AEOTrack's AI brainstorm and recommend relevant questions for your industry.
  • In-Depth Analytics Table:
    • Query List: A searchable table of all your tracked questions.
    • Coverage: The share of AI search engines where your brand is mentioned.

Improvement Tools

AEOTrack includes tools to act on what the answers show:

  • Off-site plan — The first section of the Action plan: the sites the engines read when they name your competitors, and how to get onto them. Start here: Get named: work the off-site plan.
  • Improvement Plan — Your action plan: the sites AI reads first, then the answers you're already in, then a hygiene checklist.
  • Site Analyzer — Analyze technical issues, structure, performance, and AI readiness.
  • Content Analyzer — Review readability, headings, content quality, and coverage.
  • Content Optimizer — Improve AI visibility, structure, citability, and search performance.
  • Question Explorer — Type in a topic and AI brainstorms likely questions people ask about it; track the ones you want.
  • FAQ Generator — FAQs written from the text of a page you choose (homepage by default); each answer quotes the page, unsupported questions are left out, and FAQs start as drafts you approve before any integration publishes them.

Integrations

Connect AEOTrack with your existing tools to automate workflows, content updates, notifications, and reporting. Supported integrations:

  • GitHub (pull requests with hygiene files; your robots.txt is never replaced)
  • Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zapier and custom webhooks
